The village of Clover was founded in the late 19th century and began as a railway stop midway between York, S.C., and Gastonia, N.C. According to a legend, excess water spilling on the ground from the railway’s water tank caused patches of clover to spring up. Residents affectionately referred to the town as Clover Patch. Once a significant textile center, today downtown Clover has a variety of retail shops, as well as restaurants. It is also home of Feis Chlobhair, a festival celebrating the area’s Scots-Irish heritage.
